King Charles to break tradition with new honour for Princess Sophie
Princess Sophie could be in for a new honour from King Charles for her ungrudging contributions to the throne.
According to royal historian, Marlene Koenig, the 75-year-old monarch could confer the Duchess of Edinburgh the honour of a Lady of the Garter in the coming months. The presumptions comes after it was revealed Charles has named four new additions to the Order of the Garter.
Among the four will be Brigitte, the Duchess of Gloucester, the wife of Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, whom Koenig revealed is the “first spouse of a royal prince in modern times to be given the Garter.”
“I think it’s way cool that Charles has made this change, giving this to someone who has served the crown, and she and her husband were never meant to have a full-time royal career,” she told the Daily Express.
At the end, Marlene noted: “This is another new change the king has implemented, and I think we’ll see more of that in another few years.”
According to the royal historian, the late Queen Elizabeth initially wanted her daughter Princess Anne to be a Lady of the Garter, however, the Princess Royal “wanted to be a Knight of the Garter.”
For the unversed, the Order of the Garter is the oldest order of Chivalry in the UK, which goes back to Edward III.
